Subtitles vs dubbing: choosing your workflow

Choose based on how your audience will watch and listen, and what you can review.

Subtitles

Use captions when preserving the original spoken performance matters or viewers need readable text. Inspect line length and reading speed. Burned-in captions stay visible; separate tracks depend on player support.

Preset dubbing

Use a selected voice when your audience benefits from listening in another language. Review casting, pronunciation, meaning and timing. The choice changes speech, not mouth movements.

Voice cloning

Use an authorized original or reference voice when speaker identity matters. Permission and listening review are essential. Cloning does not guarantee an exact voice or lip sync.

Combine where useful

Enable optional captions for a new dub when both listening and reading help. Do not assume video credit also pays for an independent caption translation. Review the quote for the selected workflow.
