How to shift subtitle timing manually

Apply a global offset when all captions are consistently early or late.

Reviewed

Before you start

  • Open Captions, sign in and import a valid permitted SRT or VTT.
  • Identify a consistent timing difference using a video player.
  • This manual operation does not call AI or automatically align speech.

Apply an offset

  1. Open Adjust synchronization below the caption panels.
  2. In Apply to, choose Original subtitles or the available Translated subtitles.
  3. Enter Offset (seconds). A positive value delays captions; a negative value brings them forward.
  4. Click Apply offset, inspect the changed times and download the appropriate file.
  5. Test the beginning, middle and end beside the video.

Example

If captions appear 0.5 seconds too early throughout a permitted recording, try a positive 0.5-second offset and check the result. This is an illustrative offset, not a measured example.

Limits and troubleshooting

A global shift cannot fix timing drift or independently incorrect cues. If the result is stale, refresh the translation first. If shifting causes invalid timing, follow validation feedback instead of exporting an unchecked file.

Questions and answers

Does it fix drift?

No. A global offset changes all times by the same amount. Drift requires reviewing the individual caption timing in an appropriate editing workflow.
